Sambar Dal 

Ingredients:

  • Toor dal (3/4 cup)
  • Tamarind (1 to 2 tsp) 
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric (1/4 tsp)
  • Chopped onions (1 piece)
  • Vegetable drumsticks (1 to 2)
  • Red pumpkin (3 to 4 cubed)
  • Chopped eggplant (1/2 cup)
  • Chopped carrots (1-2 piece)
  • chopped Green chili (1 piece)
  • Chopped Tomato (1 piece)
  • chopped potato (1 piece)
  • oil (2 tsp)
  • Curry leaves(1 sprig)
  • Mustard seeds( Black, 1/2 tsp)
  • Asafoetida (two pinches )
  • sambar powder(2 tsp)


HOW TO MAKE THE RECIPE



Preparation for sambar recipe:
  1. Take tamarind in bowl and soaked it in water
  2. Take dal, salt ( to taste), turmeric, and water in a pressure cooker and cook  them for 5 whistles (at least) in a medium-high flame 
  3. Wait until the pressure release and then mashed the dal with a potato masher and then add the tamarind water ( 3 tsp) and keep them aside
  4. Take oil in a pan and heat it, then fry the chopped eggplant and salt and keep them aside
  5. Add the carrot, potato, drumsticks, pumpkin, and salt in that pan and then cook them for 2 min
  6. Add copped tomato and cook for 1 min then add water, sambar powder, kashmiri red chili powder, green chili and stir everything together 
  7. Then boiled them for 10-15 mins
  8. Add that eggplant and dal in that pan and cook it for 5 mins until the oil will float on the surface. The sambar dal is ready
  9. Take oil in different pan and then add mustard seeds, pinch of Asafoetida, curry leaves and cook them for few seconds until the leaves turn crisp 
  10. Add this on the sambar dal. 
  11. Serve the sambar dal with idli and dosa.
